CHAPTER 18
MASTURBATION SOLO AND MUTUAL
People seem fascinated in masturbation statistics. Masturbation statistics are very much debated and at best undependable. The most accepted show that 60% of women admit to masturbating. Notice we wrote "admit!" Other statistics state that 20% of women under 30 years of age masturbate once a week, and 7% do it every other day and on average, females begin masturbating at about 14 or 15 years of age. Among our patients, the percentages appear much higher and the starting age in a few cases go as low as five years. For men, the starting age is usually between 12 to 15 and goes up to over 90%. If you're really curious go to the chapter "Who's doing what... sex statistics," but take these numbers with a grain of salt as people are often less than honest when it comes to inquiries about their sexual habits.
For this chapter statistics are of no real importance for it only related to you and your partner and what others do has little baring. As far as you're concerned, you either do or don't and that's all that matters. Just knowing that you're no different from others may give you some better feeling about yourself and your partner. Knowing that most people do masturbate either alone or mutually with their partners as a part of their foreplay, this knowledge may be comforting to you.
Why do people masturbate? For both men and women loneliness is high on the list. When coming out of a relationship that has been sexually active and not wanting to have sex with just anyone, masturbation is an easy and available source of relief. Of course loneliness is not just for those leaving a relationship. Anyone who has a limited number of acquaintances may have to rely on fantasy and self stimulation.
Erotic thoughts are strong aphrodisiacs. Remember we said the brain is the largest sex organ in the body. Fantasy demands action for most people. Seeing a romantic movie, TV story or reading a sexually stimulating story can set of the chain of events that lead to a self induced orgasm or two, or three, or more. Reminiscing about past sex can get the action going.
Incomplete sexual satisfaction in relationships is a cause for seeking other gratification. This is a major cause for both men and women to stray and enter adulterous affairs. But more often than entering an affair people will first ease their frustrations with solo sex. Often women have to rely on either solo sex or mutual masturbation when their partner finishes too soon. With a multi-orgasmic partner this becomes a rare factor.
Some couples use masturbation as a contraceptive method. If they don't want to use contraceptives for religious reasons or don't want to have intercourse outside of marriage they can turn to masturbation for their ultimate relief. They may masturbate alone or together for the erotic and intimate boost or they may masturbate each other simultaneously or one after the other. In these cases foreplay is both the entr e and the dessert.
